Prerequisites and Requirements

Check here if you meet the requirements and conditions before applying for the au pair program.

Legal requirements:

  • You are at least 18 and no more than 25 years old at the time of application.
  • You are unmarried.
  • You have no children and/or foster children.
  • You have not previously held an exchange residence permit in the Netherlands.
  • You have not worked for the host family before, in the Netherlands or abroad.
  • You are not related to the host family up to the third degree. 
  • You do light housework for the host family. You will do this for a maximum of 8 hours per day and a maximum of 30 hours per week. You will have at least 2 days off per week.
  • You don't do tasks for people who need more special care.
  • You and the host family make a daily schedule for all 7 days of the week.

Our conditions:

  • You speak English 
  • You have at least 1 year of work experience with children

Legal requirements:

  • You meet the general conditions that apply to everyone.
  • You are at least 18 and no more than 25 years old at the time of application.
  • You are unmarried.
  • You have no children and/or foster children.
  • You have not previously held an exchange residence permit in the Netherlands.
  • You will live with a host family that is registered in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP). You will also register at that address.
  • You have not worked for the host family before, in the Netherlands or abroad.
  • You are not related to the host family up to the third degree. Family refers to parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, uncles and aunts, cousins, great-grandparents and great-great-grandchildren.
  • You do light housework for the host family. You will do this for a maximum of 8 hours per day and a maximum of 30 hours per week. You will have at least 2 days off per week.
  • You do not do tasks for people who need more special care, for which you must have a specific skill. For example, nursing tasks.
  • You and the host family make a daily schedule for all 7 days of the week. You and the family sign this daily schedule. The daily schedule must include at least the following:
    • How many hours of light housework the au pair will do.
    • Which 2 days in the week the au pair is free.
    • Whoever does light housework in addition to the au pair. Another person should be named.
  • You have not signed a contract with a host family, mediation agency (Dutch or foreign) or au pair agency, which states that you have to pay a (monetary) fine if you do not fulfill the contract.
  • You did not pay money as a deposit to an agency (Dutch or foreign) or au pair agency.
