Language course
The au pair is entitled to a language course. The training institutions listed below provide language courses specially designed for au pairs.
Kickstart School
This Basiscursus Nederlands (A0-A1) is specially designed to help au pairs learn in a short time the most essential Dutch phrases that enable communication with children. The following topics are covered in this beginner's course:
- Daily care: instructions for meals and dressing, etc.
- Greeting the children and asking about their day
- Playing and reading to the children
- Describing the environment (animals, stores, etc.)
- Road safety and emergencies (including asking about aches and pains)
Language House
Language courses especially for au pairs can be done at Taalthuis, which is at 9 locations in the Netherlands.
At Taalthuis, students learn to speak Dutch in small groups. Using current themes and a variety of fun topics, they master the Dutch language in a playful way. They also learn a lot about life in the Netherlands.
Taalthuis differs from other regular language institutes by teaching in game form. Because the lessons are taught in a playful way, learning is easier.
The course 'Dutch for au pairs' is specially designed for au pairs. The Dutch lessons focus on the situation of the au pair, such as the habits and customs of the Dutch family, child care, safety, playing and going to school. Each lesson deals with a grammatical topic alternated with many games and the singing of children's songs. The au pairs also read a children's book together in each lesson. The personal attention for the au pairs is important. Therefore, the number of participants per group is a maximum of eleven.
